Ways to include children
Procedures for successful Inclusion
Snack time happens halfway through the session and it is a social time for the children and staff. Parents are asked to send a healthy snack such as a piece of fruit/vegetable, crackers/cheese, whole grain breads etc. No chips, cookies or candies please. We only have them on party days.
We are a nut free preschool, do not send nuts/peanuts or a snack that contains nuts. Snack will be sent back home if it’s not nutritious or it contain nuts. Do not send any juice. Children will be encouraged to participate in snack but at no time will they be forced to eat or have food withheld as a form of discipline. Staff will:
Classes begin with a gradual entry and a family member must accompany during this period. Gradual entry has many benefits as follows:
Preschool will be closed on statutory holidays as well as for the Christmas break, Spring break, and up to four planning days from September-June. Families will be given the dates in advance and a reminder note closer to the date.
Fire drills are conducted on regular basis to teach children how to respond to the fire bell. Any other emergency situation we will follow the community center’s lead.
Please send your child in comfortable, washable clothing and shoes with non-slip soles for climbing activities. If they wear boots to preschool, please send pair of shoes in their backpack. All of the child’s belonging should be labeled with the child’s name. We can not be responsible for any lost article of clothing.
Please let us know if your child will be absent for a day or going away for a longer period. In order to hold your spot, you are required to pay the full fee.
All written information that is confidential will be stored in a secure place. No information will be released about a child or family without the written consent from the enrolling parent/ legal guardian except in situations of legal responsibility related to child protection.
All staff, substitutes, students and volunteers will complete a criminal record search process prior to starting in the preschool program.
Parents/Guardians are required to provide at least one month’s notice when they withdraw their child. More notice is preferable if the family can give it. This is crucial as most families on the waitlist require one month’s notice from the Preschool before they can accept a space. In lieu of notice we require one month’s payment.
In a case when a child gets enrolled in the program without any prior notice of his/her extra needs, parents will be asked to withdraw the child until needed support, services, a care plan is in place and space is available. To handle a situation like this, centre will take following steps:
The names of those authorized to pick up a child should be listed on registration form. A child will not be sent home with anyone who does not have parent’s permission. Parents should notify the staff if anyone other than those authorized will pick up their child. All families and authorized persons must pickup their child by the end of the class.
For the Late Pick Up there will be a $20.00 service charge for the first 15 minutes and thereafter an additional charge of a $1.00 per minute. On rare occasion, if an emergency arises, notify the centre as soon as possible and make arrangements for pickup. If late pickup is repeated problem, the supervisor and the parents will meet to try to address the problem.
In the case of custody disputes between parents, we will require a copy of the court order. If an unauthorized parent comes to visit or pick up their child, we will request that he/she leaves. In the case of difficulty we will call 911.
If an unauthorized parent forcibly takes their child, we will not attempt to physically restrain him/her. Rather we will release the child, call 911 and the other parent immediately. The reason for this policy is that we can not risk children and teacher safety by physical confrontation.
In the case of Alleged Impaired Authorized Pick Up; if a staff member believes that a child will be at risk the staff person in charge will offer to call a relative or friend to pick up the person and child OR contact the Ministry for Children and Families.
At Sunset Preschool Centre we value and respect each child as a unique individual. Our goal in guiding children’s behaviour is to ensure their safety and to assist them in developing self-confidence, self-esteem, self-control, self-discipline and sensitivity in their interactions with others. Our guidance strategies include;
If a child has persistent behavioural problems, staff will use a variety of guidance strategies, depending on the individual needs of the child. These strategies may include a behaviour management program. Families will be consulted if a child has persistent behavioural problems in the centre that require a consistent systematic approach.
Please inform the Staff about any allergies or health concerns your child may have. Keep your child at home if he/she is not well to join in all the daily activities, both inside and outside. Inform the Staff if your child has a communicable disease If your child becomes sick at the preschool, you will be called to come and pick-up. The Vancouver/Richmond Health Board and provides us with the ongoing services of health care professionals.
Children should not come to preschool if you see any of the following symptoms;
If a child has an exceptional health care need, then we (family, teachers, and health care professionals) need to develop a health care plan.
